Alternation-based Lexicon Reconstruction
نویسندگان
چکیده
This research is aimed at developing a hierarchical alternation-based lexical architecture for machine translation. The proposed architecture makes extensive use of information sharing in describing valency frames through derivational links from base frames, rather than as independent entities. This has advantages in descriptive efficiency, robustness and maintainability. The lexicon being developed is built up automatically from the Japanese component of an existing Japanese-English machine translation lexicon. The reconstruction process consists of analysing consistencies in selectional restrictions between valency frames, and postulating alternations where selectional restrictions are preserved on matching case slots; this was found to perform at 60.9% accuracy. All alternation candidates are incorporated into the final-version lexicon as derivational links, and expanded out at run time.

Valency Lexicon of Czech Verbs: Alternation-Based Model
The main objective of this paper is to introduce an alternation-based model of valency lexicon of Czech verbs VALLEX. Alternations describe regular changes in valency structure of verbs – they are seen as transformations taking one lexical unit and return a modified lexical unit as a result. We characterize and exemplify ‘syntactically-based’ and ‘semantically-based’ alternations and their effe...
متن کاملA Method Of Creating New Bilingual Valency Entries Using Alternations
We present a method that uses alternation data to add new entries to an existing bilingual valency lexicon. If the existing lexicon has only one half of the alternation, then our method constructs the other half. The new entries have detailed information about argument structure and selectional restrictions. In this paper we focus on one class of alternations, but our method is applicable to an...
متن کاملFrom PropBank to EngValLex: Adapting the PropBank-Lexicon to the Valency Theory of the Functional Generative Description
EngValLex is the name of an FGD-compliant valency lexicon of English verbs, built from the PropBank-Lexicon and following the structure of Vallex, the FGD-based lexicon of Czech verbs. EngValLex is interlinked with the PropBank-Lexicon, thus preserving the original links between the PropBank-Lexicon and the PropBank-Corpus. Therefore it is also supposed to be part of corpus annotation. This pap...
متن کاملEnglish Object Alternations: A Unified Account
A hallmark of the English verb lexicon is the availability of multiple argument realization options for many English verbs. Studies of the English verb lexicon have drawn attention to one facet of this phenomenon: the availability of a range of object alternations (Levin 1993)—alternate realizations of the VP-internal arguments of apparently triadic verbs. One of the best-known of these alterna...
متن کامل'To' in two places and the dative alternation
Observations presented in this paper regarding verbs of giving provide new insight into the “nonproductivity” puzzle of the dative alternation, especially with respect to the class referred to as “Latinate” verbs. I show that, far from being a quirk of lexical entries or of a Latinate lexicon, availability of the double object construction (DOC) is systematic, and can be explained by the existe...
